they did during foetal life.<\/p><p>Diseases, treatments and certain situations can also affect sperm production: mumps, cancer chemotherapy.<\/p><p>Finally, the presence of varicose veins in the testicles can interfere with spermatogenesis.<\/p><ul><li>Genetic abnormalities<\/li><\/ul><p>Spermatozoa may contain genetic abnormalities, making them unfertile or poorly fertile.<\/p><p>Their production may even be completely stopped, resulting in azoospermia, an exceptional disorder.<\/p><ul><li>Damaged vas deferens<\/li><\/ul><p>Spermatozoa travel through ducts at the exit of the testicles to acquire mobility and be transported outwards.<\/p><p>These may be partially absent since birth, or \u00abblocked\u00bb by local infection.<\/p><p>Many products can impair male fertility.<\/p><p>This is certainly true of tobacco, alcohol and drugs.<\/p><ul><li>Environmental factors<\/li><\/ul><p>These days, the environment is a hot topic.<\/p><p>Testicular tissue is very fragile and sensitive to physical agents, such as excessive heat (working in an overheated atmosphere, tight-fitting briefs and jeans that raise testicular temperature), and environmental chemicals, (2 to 5 %).<\/p><p>In almost 10 % of cases, the workup is normal and no cause is found.<\/p><ul><li>The influence of age<\/li><\/ul><p>Age is a very specific factor in the decline of female fertility.<\/p><p>From the age of 30 onwards, female fertility begins to decline and the miscarriage rate rises.<\/p><p>While the average time to conceive between the ages of 20 and 30 is six months, it is gradually increasing.<\/p><p>Fertility declines sharply from the age of 37.<\/p><ul><li>An ovulation disorder<\/li><\/ul><p>The absence of ovulation, or ovulation of poor quality, can have various origins: it may be a disorder in the control of ovulation by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, a disorder in the functioning of the ovaries or, more rarely, the adrenal glands.<\/p><ul><li>A blocked or damaged tube<\/li><\/ul><p>When a tube is infected by a disease, particularly a sexually transmitted infection, it closes.<\/p><p>If the disease is bilateral, fertilization becomes impossible, as the spermatozoa can no longer reach the egg waiting at the end of the tube just after ovulation.<\/p><p>It's also a factor in ectopic pregnancy.<\/p><ul><li>Endometrial disease that migrates outside the uterus<\/li><\/ul><p>Endometriosis is a very special disease.<\/p><p>Its mechanism is still poorly understood.<\/p><p>Menstrual blood contains cells from the uterine lining.<\/p><p>However, these cells sometimes migrate outside the uterus, to the fallopian tubes, ovaries or abdominal cavity.<\/p><p>There, they graft and organize themselves into microcysts.<\/p><p>As these cells are hormone-dependent, they follow the ovarian cycle, causing a small amount of bleeding inside the micro-cyst.<\/p><p>This can lead to pain and adhesions around the uterus.<\/p><p>The meeting between the egg and a spermatozoon becomes difficult.<\/p><ul><li>A uterine anomaly<\/li><\/ul><p>Uterine causes involve either the cervix or the uterine cavity itself.<\/p><p>After cervical surgery, fertility may be reduced.<\/p><p>Most often, these are abnormalities of the cervical secretion known as \u00abmucus\u00bb or \u00abcervical mucus\u00bb.<\/p><p>It is necessary for the reception of spermatozoa during the conjugal union.<\/p><p>Its role is essential for sperm penetration, storage and subsequent fertilization.<\/p><p>Malformations of the uterus may be involved.<\/p><p>Recurrent miscarriages can be linked to uterine malformations or immune causes.<\/p><ul><li>Environmental causes<\/li><\/ul><p>Tobacco has a recognized and significant harmful effect.<\/p><p>In women who smoke ten cigarettes a day, it takes about twice as long to conceive.\u00a0<\/p><p>The miscarriage rate is higher, and smoking has harmful effects on the embryo.<\/p><p>Obesity and thinness are factors in hypofertility.<\/p><p>Exposure to a number of chemicals is mentioned, but here too, investigations are needed.<\/p><ul><li>\u00abInfertility without cause\u00bb<\/li><\/ul><p>In almost 7 % of cases, the medical check-up finds no explanation.<\/p><p>This is known as functional work-up.<\/p><p>More or less invasive, these tests concern both men and women.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element terms, this means recording your temperature at the same time every morning.<\/p><p>A normal curve shows variations of a few tenths (2 at least): at the start of the cycle the temperature is low, then plummets on the day of ovulation and rises above 37 in the second part of the cycle after ovulation.<\/p><p>It then remains stable, but at a higher level than at the start of the cycle, until the arrival of menstruation.<\/p><p>Find out more about the temperature curve.<\/p><ul><li>Pelvic ultrasound<\/li><\/ul><p>This is one of the first procedures requested by the doctor.<\/p><p>Pelvic ultrasound can detect certain ovarian malformations (cysts, etc.) and uterine malformations (fibroids, polyps, malformations, endometriosis, etc.).<\/p><p>In case of suspicion, more detailed tests are prescribed.<\/p><ul><li>Hormone check-ups<\/li><\/ul><p>Infertility problems can be linked to hormonal disorders.<\/p><p>It is therefore essential to measure certain hormones in the blood to verify their presence and quantity.<\/p><p>We measure levels of estradiol (which stimulates the growth of a follicle under the effect of FSH), FSH (which allows the maturation of a follicle each month), LH (which provokes ovulation), progesterone (a sign of good ovarian function), prolactin (an excess of which disrupts ovulation) and sometimes inhibin B and anti-mullerian hormone (which provide additional information on ovarian reserve, reflecting the age of the ovaries).<\/p><p>It is important to carry out these tests at the right time in the menstrual cycle.<\/p><ul><li>Spermogram<\/li><\/ul><p>This is an analysis of semen obtained after masturbation at the laboratory.<\/p><p>Sperm motility can thus be observed and counted.<\/p><p>Sperm normally contains between 20 and 400 million spermatozoa. If there are fewer, it's called oligospermia.<\/p><p>Azoospermia is the absence of spermatozoa.<\/p><p>Finally, asthenospermia indicates not the number of gametes, but their low mobility, which is essential to reach and fertilize the oocyte.<\/p><p>If the spermogram shows any \u00abdefects\u00bb, it is advisable to repeat it two or three months later.<\/p><ul><li>The Huhner or post-coital test<\/li><\/ul><p>This is a vaginal swab, to be taken in the laboratory within hours of sexual intercourse.<\/p><p>The behavior of spermatozoa in cervical mucus is examined.<\/p><p>We can also analyze the mucus, its texture and quantity, which are essential for fertility.<\/p><p>However, this test does not replace a spermogram.<\/p><ul><li>Hysterosalpingography<\/li><\/ul><p>This is an
