Dr Oukacha Nadia - Obstetrics specialist in Casablanca

Obstetrical ultrasound

Three ultrasounds are suggested for a normal pregnancy, with no obstetrical risk.

Ideally, they are performed at 12, 22 and 32 weeks of amenorrhea.

1st trimester ultrasound

First-trimester ultrasound must be performed between 11 and 14 weeks' amenorrhea (SA).

Outside these dates, certain parameters can no longer be assessed correctly, such as nuchal translucency or chorionicity in a multiple pregnancy.

It can be used to determine :

  • Gestational age and pregnancy dating (date of onset of pregnancy and gestational age) by measuring the craniocaudal length of the embryo
  • Pregnancy progression
  • Determining the number of embryos and the type of multiple pregnancy (chorionicity and zygocity)
  • Measurement of fetal neck thickness (nuchal translucency is correlated with the risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, particularly trisomy 21).
  • Screening for certain fetal malformations: checking for the presence of the cephalic pole, four limbs, the integrity of the abdominal wall, the presence of a stomach and bladder.
  • First trimester ultrasound abnormalities

This first trimester ultrasound allows us to eliminate :

  • A terminated pregnancy
  • An ectopic pregnancy
  • A clear egg
  • A molar pregnancy
  • A discrepancy between the theoretical term and the ultrasound term (a pregnancy that is more advanced or less advanced than the expected term)
  • A malformation such as: anencephaly, omphalocele, laparoschisis, cervical hygroma.

2nd trimester ultrasound

It enables :

  • Study the morphology of the fetus and its organs
  • Check for malformations
  • Determine fetal growth and well-being
  • Determine the location of the placenta.

3rd trimester ultrasound

It enables :

  • Study fetal size, growth and well-being
  • Estimate weight
  • Identify possible malformations
  • Determine the location of the placenta
