Obstetrical ultrasound
1st trimester ultrasound
First-trimester ultrasound must be performed between 11 and 14 weeks' amenorrhea (SA).
Outside these dates, certain parameters can no longer be assessed correctly, such as nuchal translucency or chorionicity in a multiple pregnancy.
It can be used to determine :
- Gestational age and pregnancy dating (date of onset of pregnancy and gestational age) by measuring the craniocaudal length of the embryo
- Pregnancy progression
- Determining the number of embryos and the type of multiple pregnancy (chorionicity and zygocity)
- Measurement of fetal neck thickness (nuchal translucency is correlated with the risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, particularly trisomy 21).
- Screening for certain fetal malformations: checking for the presence of the cephalic pole, four limbs, the integrity of the abdominal wall, the presence of a stomach and bladder.
- First trimester ultrasound abnormalities
This first trimester ultrasound allows us to eliminate :
- A terminated pregnancy
- An ectopic pregnancy
- A clear egg
- A molar pregnancy
- A discrepancy between the theoretical term and the ultrasound term (a pregnancy that is more advanced or less advanced than the expected term)
- A malformation such as: anencephaly, omphalocele, laparoschisis, cervical hygroma.
2nd trimester ultrasound
It enables :
- Study the morphology of the fetus and its organs
- Check for malformations
- Determine fetal growth and well-being
- Determine the location of the placenta.
3rd trimester ultrasound
It enables :
- Study fetal size, growth and well-being
- Estimate weight
- Identify possible malformations
- Determine the location of the placenta
