This is a visual examination of the cervix, using a magnifying glass called a colposcope.
This examination is performed during a gynecological consultation.
Its aim is to confirm or rule out the existence of a cervical lesion, suspected by the cervico-vaginal smear or clinical examination.
When a lesion is suspected, colposcopy can be used to refer the case to the gynecologist for a biopsy in the most suspicious location.
Colposcopy is indicated in the following cases: The screening cervico-vaginal smear suggests the existence of cellular abnormalities (abnormal smear).
During a gynecological examination, the physician suspects the presence of a cervical lesion (unusual-looking cervix, ectropion appearing atypical).
Investigate the cause of unexplained genital bleeding, particularly after intercourse
When closer monitoring of the cervix is warranted (post-operative, condyloma, etc.).
When looking for the cause of heavy genital discharge.
The examination is performed outside the menstrual period, preferably a few days after the end of the period.
In post-menopausal women, prior treatment with estrogen (for 10 days) is often necessary to optimize examination conditions.
The examination takes between 5 and 10 minutes.
It is completely painless.
Her discomfort is due to stress and the presence of the speculum in the vagina throughout the examination.
Biopsy is sometimes sensitive.
The examination itself usually comprises three stages:
Examination after application of Lugol's iodine solution at 2%, known as the Schiller test.
The application of these two dyes causes the abnormal cells to react and change color.
Fragments are then analyzed under the microscope by the pathologist in the laboratory.
At the end of the examination, the patient and her attending physician receive a report in the form of a cartography, indicating the appearance and grade of the lesions according to colposcopic terminology.
The biopsy may cause a small amount of bleeding, which usually stops within a few minutes.
The patient can continue with normal activities after the examination.
Sexual relations, bathing and swimming are not recommended for 3 days once a biopsy has been performed.
The definitive conclusion is given only after receipt of the biopsy results (7 to 10 days), during a second appointment.
