This type of operation gives the surgeon excellent access to the genital tract.
The laparotomy most often consists of a horizontal opening at pelvic level of around 10 cm (ideal for going to the beach without aesthetic concerns).
The horizontal incision avoids damaging the abdominal wall muscles, so the operation can be performed through them.
In some cases, however, a slightly less aesthetic vertical opening can be used.
Horizontal laparotomy is widely used for women giving birth by caesarean section, and is also performed for certain cancer surgeries such as ovarian cancer, or other pelvic surgeries such as large uterus hysterectomy, poly-myomectomy, and removal of endometriosis cysts or nodules.
